3 Tips For Taking Care Of Your Natural Hair When Wearing A Wig

Posted on: 4 January 2017

If you wear a wig, and still have some natural hair underneath your wig, here are a few tips for taking good care of your natural hair that is hiding out underneath your wig.

#1 Pull Back Your Hair

If you have natural hair that is underneath your wig, you are going to want that hair to lay as flat as possible and stay in place in order to ensure that your wig looks as great as possible and stays in place.

There are a few different ways you can secure your natural hair under your wig. One of the best ways to secure your natural hair under your wig is by braiding your hair; braids are usually easy to maintain and keep your hair in place. Cornrows are another option. Cornrows stay in place for a long period of time, are easy to maintain, and will create an extremely flat surface for your wig to rest on top of. Finally, you can twist your hair back. Keep in mind though that twists tend to get frizzy quicker than braids and cornrows and generally require a little more maintenance than the other two options discussed above.

#2 Clean Your Head After A Workout

After you work out, you are going to want to clean your head. That doesn't mean that you need to take a shower and wash your scalp. However, you are going to want to get rid of the sweat that has accumulated on your head.

One of the best ways to do that is to take a washcloth and wipe down your scalp and hair. You can also take a baby wipe and use that to wipe down your natural hair and scalp as well. Finally, you can use some dry shampoo on your head. Dry shampoo is a great way to get rid of a buildup of natural oils on your head.

#3 Wash Your Hair Every Few Weeks

Just because your hair is hiding out under your wig does not mean that you can neglect taking care of it. You still need to undo your twists, braids or cornrows every couple of weeks and wash and deep condition your hair really well.

After you are done washing your hair, allow it to air dry. This will help protect your hair from becoming damaged through the use of a dryer. You also want to make sure that your hair is dry before you put your wig back on; putting a wig on over wet hair can lead to the growth of mold on your wig.

Once your hair is dry, brush your hair to get rid of any hair that has shed during the past few weeks, and redo the style that you are using to keep your hair flat under your wig. For more advice, contact a wig company like Hair In A Pinch.
